SUBJECT: Slow or stalled characters in PowerPoint 2002 (Office XP) slide shows

Problem description:
When you play a slide show (including the Vox Proxy tutorials), at some point the characters essentially stop. Voice either stops or skips very slowly. The problem seldom occurs using the Script Writer’s TEST button, but occurs while playing the slide show.

Cause:
This problem is experienced in only PowerPoint 2002 (in Office-XP) or in late service-packs of PowerPoint 2000. It is caused by PowerPoint getting into a CPU-bound loop, not leaving enough resources for the character animations or the Text-To-Speech to work.

Permanent Fix:
The fix is to turn on a PowerPoint feature called “Show All Scripts”. The problem is that this feature does not appear in the default PowerPoint menus. Here’s how you add it:
